Protect yourself from Swine Flu

What You Can Do to Stay Healthy

There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.

* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

* Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
* If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

  1. I saw an interview of the guy who runs the CDC. He recommends that when you sneeze, don't sneeze into your hands but instead into your bent elbow or even on your own shoulder, which comes into less contact with doorknobs, bannisters, etc. I had heard this previously (years ago!) from a chef making a demonstration on TV, but her reasoning (as a food service professional) was that frequently her hands were in and out of food.

Tonight Stephen Colbert pointed out that sneezing on your own shoulder could be inconvenient during the upcoming toobtop season, and they then showed a hilarous photoshopped graphic of Colbert's head on an overweight, hairy MAN's body clothed in a toobtop. It was quite funny.

  2. Oh! Another point that the CDC didn't mention but my husband brought up... As with any flu season, eat right, get plenty of rest, and drink sufficient fluids, so your immune system will be well prepared for fighting a viral attack if you should get sick.

Sorry. I'll stop hogging the forum. (No pun intended!)
